Accessibility
We want every student to be able to use Summa, including students who use a screen reader, a keyboard, zoom or other assistive technology.
What we aim for
We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA. In practice, Summa is built so that:
- text has a contrast of at least 4.5:1 with its background, and large text and control borders at least 3:1
- everything can be reached with a keyboard, in reading order, with a visible focus outline
- color is never the only signal: right and wrong answers also show ✓ and ✗ and have text for screen readers
- buttons and links are large enough to tap, at least 44 by 44 pixels
- pages work on narrow phone screens without scrolling sideways
- if your device asks for reduced motion, Summa turns off its movement and animations
- sound and vibration are off unless you turn them on
Known limitations
- Ranked rounds give 30 seconds for each question, and the time can't be extended yet. If the timer is a barrier for you, email us and we'll work out an alternative.
- Notes and files students share (such as PDFs and photos) come from other students, and may not be accessible. Text we extract from files is used to write quizzes, which you can answer without opening the file.
We haven't had Summa independently audited, so there may be problems we don't know about yet.
Tell us about a problem
If something on Summa is hard to use with your setup, email summacapybara@gmail.com with “Accessibility” in the subject. Tell us the page, what happened, and the device, browser and any assistive technology you use. We aim to reply within 5 business days, and to help you get what you need in the meantime.
